About Me
You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels, coffers of gold.
Richer than I you could never be—
I had a Mother who read to me.
~Strickland Gillilan
My grandmother clipped this verse out of a newspaper and kept it on her refrigerator for years. It sums up a huge part of our family’s inherited maternal philosophy. If there’s a love-for-books gene, it’s in my DNA. Launched thus from my early childhood, it was Nancy Drew who made me want to read All The Books and Victoria Holt and Dave Barry who made me want to write. In sixth grade, I met and fell in love with the words of O. Henry, Edgar Allan Poe, Shirley Jackson, and Rudyard Kipling. And I discovered the joy of diagramming sentences. You heard me. JOY! (To this day, I can look at any sentence and picture the simple diagram in my head.) My course was set from there on out.

Graduation Day
I earned a B.A. in English at Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!) with a minor in secondary education. I chose the major because I got to read books and write about them for credit, and the minor because I’d get to teach books and writing for a living. The seven years I spent as a middle school English teacher were equal parts rewarding and challenging, and I’m so grateful for the experience. But as it often does, life happens, and I needed a more portable, flexible vocation. I wanted to write, but I had also learned through teaching how much I loved helping others develop and polish their writing too. And because we live in this marvelous age of technology, freelance editing turned out to be a dream job.
Over the last nine years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some amazing clients, many of whom have brought me multiple projects. I’ve edited full-length novels, short stories, magazine articles, web content, manuals, blogs, non-fiction books, graduate-level research papers, and academic journal submissions. I’m a current member of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) and ACES. I’m also writing two novels of my own—one is urban fantasy, the other is Southern gothic suspense. And in my spare time (ha!), I’m working toward a master’s degree in linguistics with a focus on English language studies.
